Enabling Decarbonization Management through GX x DX

To achieve the Japanese government’s goal of carbon neutrality by 2050, reducing CO₂ emissions—especially among small and medium-sized enterprises—has become an urgent challenge. Against this backdrop, SCSK Corporation, the core IT company of Sumitomo Group, is leveraging its strengths in digital technology to support corporate decarbonization efforts.

In its medium-term management plan launched in fiscal 2023, SCSK identified “creating next-generation digital businesses through co-creation with society” as one of its fundamental strategies, with a particular emphasis on the green transformation (GX) field. To advance this strategy, the company established the GX Business Division in April 2023.

SCSK is focusing on the “use” segment—the demand side—within the “produce, transport, and use” framework for achieving carbon neutrality outlined by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. Through relationships with approximately 8,000 customers, SCSK has recognized that decarbonization efforts on the demand side are lagging behind. Under the slogan “GX (green transformation) x DX (digital transformation),” SCSK is leveraging digital technology to powerfully support Japan’s overall decarbonization, with a particular emphasis on transforming the demand side.

The GX Business Division offers three main solutions: (1) the Eco Supply Chain Platform (SPF), (2) EneTrack, and (3) ZEBiT.

Achieving supply chain decarbonization through cloud services

Of these, the Environmental SPF business is an ecosystem-based platform designed to support small and medium-sized enterprises in their decarbonization efforts. SCSK aims to provide a service that accelerates GX across the entire supply chain, from data measurement and sharing to reduction and value creation.

The first service launched under this initiative is COxCO Karte, designed for small and medium-sized enterprises. User companies simply upload their accounting data, and their emissions are automatically calculated with the results provided in a report. Unlike typical greenhouse gas (GHG) calculation tools, which require users to collect and input emissions data themselves, COxCO Karte automatically calculates emissions from accounting data. As a calculation service rather than a tool, it greatly reduces the workload for small and medium-sized enterprises.

Moreover, by leveraging accounting data, companies can visualize the costs associated with each emissions category, grasping their current situation from both emissions and cost perspectives. This insight can inform investment decisions for future decarbonization, guide choices such as introducing energy-saving equipment or renewable energy, and facilitate subsequent actions, including the creation and utilization of environmental value (e.g., J-Credit and I-REC described below).

Although the service was only launched in July 2025, collaboration is already progressing with numerous partners, including accounting package vendors, regional banks, and consulting firms. From next fiscal year, the Japanese government will fully implement the emissions trading system, and disclosure of Scope 3 emissions (indirect emissions across the entire value chain) will become mandatory, meaning that the demand for emissions calculations among small and medium-sized enterprises is expected to rise significantly. For companies that find in-house calculations challenging, COxCO Karte provides a highly reassuring solution.

The second service, EneTrack is an online platform for International Renewable Energy Certificates (I-RECs), which certify energy attributes, and it began operations in July 2023. It offers two main functions. One is an online procedure service, allowing users to complete the I-REC issuance process online. The other is a marketplace that connects sellers and buyers of issued I-RECs.

SCSK’s greatest strength lies in being the only internationally certified platform operator for I-RECs in Japan. Of the 11 certified operators worldwide (as of October 14, 2025), SCSK is the sole Japanese company. Since the launch of EneTrack, the number of participating companies has grown rapidly, reaching 30 as of August 2024. The distribution volume of I-RECs expanded roughly 87-fold, from 193 MWh in fiscal 2023 to 16.8 GWh in fiscal 2024.

Looking ahead, the company plans to expand its scope beyond electricity to include attribute certification for new zero-emission energy sources, such as green hydrogen and e-methane.

The third, ZEBiT, is a cloud service launched in April 2024 that enables visualization of energy use and CO₂ emissions in buildings, as well as energy saving through equipment control. Even in small and medium-sized buildings, where installing expensive building management systems such as Building Automation System (BAS) or Building Energy Management System (BEMS) is not feasible, ZEBiT allows both CO₂ emissions visualization and equipment control. Its key advantage is that it can be easily implemented without major equipment changes, helping accelerate decarbonization in existing buildings, which tend to be slow to adopt such measures.

Because ZEBiT adopts an international standard device connection protocol, it can support a wide range of equipment regardless of manufacturer. Including pilot use, it is currently deployed in about 20 buildings. Going forward, the plan is to expand its scope to include management and control of building power systems, such as solar panels, storage batteries, and EV chargers.

Pursuing a sustainable future through co-creation

Although these three businesses pursue decarbonization via different approaches, they share a common goal: a sustainable future. Through COxCO Karte, SCSK collaborates with partner companies to engage small and medium-sized enterprises that have found it difficult to implement decarbonization initiatives, encourage behavioral change and help to elevate GX initiatives across Japan.

Through EneTrack, SCSK aims to promote the circulation of international energy attribute certificates, supporting the wider adoption of renewable energy and passing on a sustainable society to future generations. With ZEBiT, SCSK seeks to create comfortable environments in which decarbonization is autonomously promoted, without the building owners or users needing to be consciously aware, while simultaneously achieving environmental improvements for the future.

The keyword is “co-creation.” In each business, SCSK contributes to building a sustainable future by deepening collaboration with a diverse range of partners.

Journalist Junichiro Hori on Sumitomo’s DNA
SCSK Corporation was established in October 2011 through the merger of CSK Corporation into Sumisho Computer Systems Corporation, the surviving company. More than a decade later, employees may not be consciously aware of Sumitomo’s philosophy in their day-to-day work. Yet, from an outsider’s perspective, Sumitomo’s DNA is evident throughout SCSK.
SCSK’s corporate philosophy is “Create Our Future of Dreams.” The company aims to generate new value together with its customers and society while pursuing sustainable growth. This philosophy can be seen as a contemporary translation of the Sumitomo family precepts established some 400 years ago—of Jiri-rita and Koushi-ichinyo (the idea that one’s own business should also benefit society as a whole)—applied to the IT services business. I look forward to SCSK making further contributions to “creating our future of dreams together” through its digital business.
