Face recognition technology detects faces in images and videos, analyzes facial features, and identifies individuals. NEC leverages this technology to provide high reliability and security in the digital world.
NEC has been ranked No. 1 in the world (Note 1) multiple times in the “1:N authentication” test conducted by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), a benchmark test that demands the highest level of accuracy in face recognition technology. By continuously enhancing the performance of its core algorithm and advancing the social implementation of face recognition, NEC has expanded its face recognition business to more than 50 countries and regions worldwide.
With a cumulative deployment at more than 80 airports globally, NEC’s technology is being utilized for a wide range of applications, including immigration control, customs procedures, boarding processes, and hospitality services. As a result, face recognition technology is increasingly regarded as an essential solution in these fields.
At the Expo 2025 Osaka Kansai Japan, NEC’s face recognition technology has been chosen to ensure safe and secure operations. In addition, the face recognition payment system enables hands-free shopping, the largest deployment of its kind in Japan.
NEC is also shaping the future with Self-Sovereign Identity, empowering people to control how their personal data is used.
The face admission control system will be available for season pass and summer pass ticket holders. A total of 51 admission gates at the Expo site entrance will be equipped with face recognition technology to prevent impersonation through ticket lending or borrowing. The number of registered ticket holders is expected to reach 1.2 million, making this NEC’s largest face recognition deployment in Japan. NEC aims to provide a system that enables visitors to enter smoothly and securely.
At stores within the Expo site, a face recognition payment system will be available not only to season pass and summer pass holders but also to one-day pass holders who have registered for MYAKU-PE! (Note 2), a unique e-money service for Expo 2025 and one of the features of the EXPO2025 Digital Wallet.
At the Expo 1970 Osaka, NEC showcased face information analysis technology at the Sumitomo Fairytale Pavilion. Through continuous refinement, NEC’s face recognition technology has evolved to achieve world-leading accuracy. For Expo 2025, NEC’s face recognition technology will be used in the admission management, the payment system, and for providing NEC Digital Identity VCs Connect (Note 3) at null2, the signature pavilion. I am deeply moved to see NEC’s face recognition technology in action at this Expo transcending 55 years in time.
At Expo 2025, 1.2 million people are expected to use face recognition, making it the largest deployment of its kind in Japan. NEC has designed the system with careful consideration for security, privacy, and human rights. We hope that decades from now, people will look back fondly and say, “I remember experiencing face recognition at the Expo.”
