Sumitomo Wharf Getting into the Warehousing Business Broadening Foundations A Key Player in Global Distribution |
| As this story suggests, the history of Sumitomo Warehouse is closely tied to the building of basic business infrastructure. And while further expanding its network in its home areas of Osaka and Kobe, the company also started doing business in Tokyo. As it expanded its network, it also poured resources into improvement of its facilities. For example, in 1905, it built the first concrete warehouse in the history of the Japanese industry, and then went on to build such robust facilities as multi-level, steel-framed structures. Sumitomo Warehouse endeavored to improve operation efficiency by devising loading shoots (slides) and promoting mechanization in accordance with increase of handling volume and of heavier cargo. Although the type of cargo handled in a warehouse reflected a transition in industry, trade, and consumer lifestyles, volume continued to rise, actually showing the strength of the Japanese economy.
