Shinkansen Junction

Seven Shinkansen (bullet train) lines link the capital, Tokyo, to the rest of Japan’s major cities. Two—the Tohoku and the Akita Shinkansen—diverge at Morioka, some 530 km north of Tokyo, and a colorful blur of people crowd Morioka Station with each arrival and departure. This is a city of travelers, a bustling commercial center and tourist town of nearly 290,000, and the services and goods-transport hub of northern Tohoku at the northeastern end of Honshu, Japan’s main island.
