Exploring Alternative Energy Markets

Nariakira Shimazu fostered industries like steelmaking, shipbuilding, and spinning, and contributed to Japan’s modernization. One of the greatest historical figures Kagoshima has ever produced, Nariakira Shimazu, helped lay the foundations for the Meiji Restoration in the 19th century.

Nissin Electric Co., Ltd.’s South Kyushu Sales Office is located in a part of the city where condominiums and commercial buildings cluster together by the river which meanders through the city center. It is in a building that also houses Sumitomo Corporation’s Minami - Kyushu Branch Office and SC Machinex Kyushu Corporation’s office. Since its establishment in 1977, Nissin Electric’s South Kyushu Sales Office, operated by the company’s Kyushu Branch, has provided the city and other local governments with products that help improve the infrastructure, including power supply equipment, and monitoring and controlling systems for water supply and sewerage. Customers are not limited to the public sector: the company also supplies private - sector plants with equipment to transform high - voltage electricity supplied by power plants into low - voltage current.
Yoshihisa Fujii, general manager who oversees the office’s entire operations, says, “constant, painstaking after - sales services are essential to fine - tune our products to meet customer as well as power usage needs.”
While maintenance and repair services are to be taken over by the Kyushu Branch, the South Kyushu Sales Office will continue to play an important role as a marketing base, handling inquiries and providing information about new products.
The South Kyushu Sales Office is in charge of a vast region that spans Kagoshima and its neighboring prefectures, and includes many mountain areas and islands accessible only by air or sea. Lengthy travel is part of the daily regimen for sales reps who must use every means of transportation imaginable — cars, trains, ferries and planes — to reach these remote areas. But Fujii says that visits to these places often give them opportunities to pick up new business ideas. “Since I travel not just by car but by ship or plane, I have more opportunities to study landscapes. During these trips, I found very windy places on the coast or in mountains and I also realized the region generally enjoys long hours of sunshine. I think the natural environment here is suitable for exploring alternative energy sources like wind and solar power. I hope we can contribute to environmental conservation with our products.”
Nissin Electric has been developing solar power generation systems since 1980. The South Kyushu Sales Office is supporting companywide efforts to promote clean, eco - friendly sources of energy.
