Skill of Master Craftspeople Underpins State-of-the-Art Technology

Konta mainly worked on power devices used in space-station and communications-satellite systems. This is a cutting-edge field of semiconductor technology requiring extremely high precision, making it difficult to automate processes. Hence, the skills of “master craftspeople” like Konta are needed. Konta obviously did not have superior skills to start with—she started with basic work and gradually honed her skills through repeated practice.
“I’m not especially dexterous or adept at working in fine detail. I’m not even a very good driver,” she admits with a laugh. “But I can concentrate. Often, when things are going well, I get so absorbed that I don’t take any breaks and suddenly realize it’s after lunchtime. I’m more motivated when there’s a lot to do, and I would set personal goals for myself—like completing so many units a day or beating my own previous record.”
In her private life, Konta is a typical homemaker and a mother of two children. “I’ve never thought I was doing anything out of the ordinary,” she says with a smile.
Konta was relocated in February to a department responsible for machinery operation. The work that she had been doing was transferred to NEC’s production facility in Kyushu.
“It was hard—I’d grown attached to the work I’d been doing for 24 years,” says Konta wistfully. In Kyushu, many workers are striving to follow in her footsteps to become contemporary master craftspeople. The world’s most advanced VLSI manufacturing facility depends on their skill.
